I first met Brian at a Cancer Council exercise course at 4 Life Physio in Mandurah. I used to follow him around the gym circuit and found that I could barely lift the weights only to find that he had increased the weights or resistance on the machines before I got to them. At first, until I caught him doing it, I thought he was far stronger than me and I was embarrassed at how weak I was. From that moment, the humour between us became legendary—and the physios still talk about the fun we had during those 12 weeks, twice a week. That initial meeting turned into a strong friendship (for Josie as well as me), filled with many interesting discussions and just as many laughs. Brian could always be relied upon to have an opinion on a subject, and he was usually more knowledgeable than anyone else I’d come across. We would talk about a wide range of topics, from everyday matters to politics and the economy in both the UK and Australia. Of course, the English always joke that the Scots are mean, so much of my humour was aimed in that direction. I once told the physio that Brian came to the exercise class half an hour early just so he could sit in the waiting room and read the newspaper free of charge. I also told her that he travelled from Geraldton every day because the course was free. It took her a moment to realise that if that were true, it would have cost him far more than that in petrol—then she got the joke. It’s still hard to believe that he’s gone, and we miss him deeply.
