A Tribute to Mum

My mum was born in Taiwan, married in Hong Kong, and migrated to Australia in 1989, the place she came to love most. She embraced Australian culture and would proudly call herself an Aussie whenever anyone asked where she was from. I have yet to meet another Asian woman in her 60s who loved watching footy, cricket, tennis, and countless other sports as passionately as she did.

Coming from humble beginnings, Mum loved giving her time to help others. She volunteered in many ways, from delivering books to the elderly, visiting people with dementia at day centres, and helping at her local church, just to name a few. Her motto was simple: “If I’m able to help someone, why not?!”

Mum was the most optimistic person I have ever known and our biggest cheerleader in life. She had a way of brightening every room she entered, and I will never forget her loud, infectious laughter that echoed through our home.

Her brightness dimmed when she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. The surgery was gruelling, and the chemotherapy felt endless, yet she faced every challenge with courage. Even on the hardest days, we would catch glimpses of her light. Although she was initially told she might have only twelve months, Mum fought bravely for more than three years.

There will not be a day where I will not miss Mum. To carry on Mum’s legacy, we want to support Pankind, as they work to improve survival and provide care for patients and their loved ones. As Mum would say, if you can help, why  not?

Thank you for your support
